Andy Farrer Photography

Ethical Photography & Sustainability

I’ve always had a love for the outdoors and feel fortunate to have built a career that allows me to spend so much time in nature. As a child I was an avid bird-watcher and often volunteered at local nature reserves, which deepened my appreciation for the environment. I still drive past some trees my year-group planted outside my old school as a teenager - they’ve grown into a mature screen for the school and look fantastic.

I’ve witnessed firsthand the dramatic changes our planet is undergoing and the devastating effects of short-term thinking on this fragile world we all depend on. I want to share these incredible moments with you in the most responsible way possible. I’m committed to doing my part to make a difference.

Madagascar

This scene I photographed in Madagascar (above) has lost over 80% of its original forest cover, probably 30-40% of that in my own lifetime.

You will see from my photography that I love woodland and tree photography, so I have partnered with TreeApp to regularly plant trees to make a positive difference.

Print Sales

I strive to minimise waste paper by careful soft-proofing, stocking a variety of roll widths and source responsibly manufactured paper wherever possible.

TREES PLANTED WITH EACH ORDER

The Print Studio

From January 2025 I will plant a tree for every order fulfilled in the print studio.

Canvas Stretcher Bars

Responsibly Sourced Materials. The stretcher bars I use are made by an FSC-accredited manufacturer, ensuring that all the pine used comes from well-managed, renewable sources. These strict forestry standards guarantee sustainability and responsible resource management. While cheaper options are available, you can have peace of mind knowing that my stretcher bars are not only built to last but also environmentally responsible. The FSC accreditation guarantees that the wood used in my stretcher bars comes from sustainably managed forests, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

High-Quality European Redwood Pine. I source all stretcher bars from European Redwood Pine, a material chosen for its superior quality and durability. While alternatives like Fir Pine, often imported from China, may be more cost-effective, they tend to be lighter, rougher to the touch, and more prone to cracking or splitting. These qualities can make assembly more challenging and compromise the overall longevity of the canvas. That’s why I prioritise using genuine Redwood Pine and European manufacturing.

Prints

Paper useage. To minimise waste, I carefully plan each print to reduce offcuts and ensure every material is sourced responsibly. I work exclusively with suppliers who share my commitment to sustainability..

Packaging

I understand the importance of packaging in reducing waste and am committed to using sustainable practices. I keep packaging to a minimum, ensuring that everything used is essential and recyclable whenever possible. Reusing materials is a priority for me, and I make a point of reusing boxes for shipping whenever I can. The cardboard postal tubes I use are heavy duty and can be reused many times and I encourage my customers to reuse them. Local customers can return them for me to use again.

I’ve also switched to paper-only “documents enclosed” pouches, which can be easily recycled, and use paper packing tape where it’s suitable. These efforts reflect my commitment to reducing waste and being more environmentally responsible.

A TREE PLANTED WITH EACH ORDER

Workshops

I recognise that travel, especially overseas, has an environmental cost. To mitigate this, I am committed to offsetting carbon emissions by planting trees for every workshop and one-to-one I conduct. These trees not only absorb carbon but also support wildlife habitats.

TREES PLANTED WITH EACH ORDER

I’m proud to work with Light & Land a company equally dedicated to sustainability. Together, we ensure that every traveler contributes to reforestation efforts through our partnership with Trees for Travel

See the Light & Land Responsible Travel policy here.

Join me in supporting a greener future. Consider reusing packaging, supporting local workshops, or simply planting a tree to offset your environmental footprint.

See how many trees I have planted with your help here and in the website footer. I'll be purchasing trees once a month.

Nature First

I’m proud to run my workshops in partnership with Nature First – The Alliance for Responsible Nature Photography.

As photographers, we all share a responsibility to protect the stunning environments we’re drawn to and inspired by.

I’m committed to preserving these wild places by following the 7 Nature First Principles and promoting them to others, helping to ensure that responsible photography becomes a shared standard in our community.
