Paper Choice +

If you are new to printing or unfamiliar with the different paper options I am happy to suggest paper options which will suit your image. Please use wetransfer to send me your images to have a look at. Alternativley, if you are local, you are welcome to make an appointment to visit the studio and see a selection of sample prints on the papers I carry in stock. On the fine art prints page you can see a list of papers I stock with descriptions and specifications.

Provide a list of filenames, size, paper choice and quantity (and papers if they vary image to image)

Size Options +

When selecting your print size, it’s important to consider your image’s aspect ratio—the relationship between its width and height—as this affects how it will fit standard frames or paper sizes.

If your image’s aspect ratio doesn’t exactly match the print size, you have a few options:

  • Fit Image to Print Size: The image is resized to fit the print dimensions while keeping its original proportions, which may result in white space along two sides without cropping.
  • Crop the Image: The image can be cropped to exactly match the print size, though this may cut off some parts of the image.
  • Custom Size: To avoid cropping or borders, I can print to a custom size matching your image’s aspect ratio, with an optional external border. Unless you have a pre-cut mount or frame to fit, a custom size is an easy option - just specify the length of the short or long edge.

If you are familiar with sizing images in photoshop, simply size your image to the dimensions you require (at 300dpi).

Understanding your aspect ratio helps you achieve the look you want for your print. Standard 3:2 camera sensors produce images close to A sizes.

Border Options +

It's important to know how your image should be trimmed and whether you require a border, especially if you already have a frame or mount that your print needs to fit.

Internal Border

If you need precise trimming, please provide the dimensions of your frame or mount opening. Keep in mind that most pre-cut mounts include a slight overlap (a few mm) to prevent the print from falling through and to make alignment easier. If you require a border within the trimmed area, please choose internal border and the size of the border in the custom border field.

External Border

I typically print on rolls of paper rather than cut sheets, allowing for flexible sizing beyond standard A-sized formats. If exact trimming isn’t required, I can easily add a border to your specified print size. You can choose what you require in the drop down list or provide alternative requirements in the custom border field.

This is the most common option for artists who sign and edition their prints. e.g. 1 inch border top, left and right and 1.5 inch at the bottom.

Soft Proofing +

When printing on different papers, factors like surface texture, base color, and reflectiveness affect the outcome. Soft proofing lets us preview these characteristics on-screen, helping match an image from a backlit screen to a reflective paper print.

If you've used my paper profiles and prepared your file, choose "Yes" to skip additional soft proofing. Otherwise, send an unadjusted file for me to proof. I don’t charge for soft proofing and recommend allowing me to adjust the file for your selected paper unless you're experienced with the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which paper to choose? +

Selecting the right paper is essential for bringing out the best in your work. I print a wide variety of photography and artwork and am always happy to help you find the perfect paper to suit your images. You can schedule a visit to see sample prints in the studio, or refer to the fine art printing page for detailed information on the papers I stock..

If you're unsure, simply select “I don’t know” in the paper choice drop-down. Once I’ve seen your image(s), I’ll be able to suggest a paper that best complements it, ensuring you get the result you're after.

Can I customise my print order? +

Yes, each order is bespoke. The prices and sizes on the fine art printing page provide a simple way of estimating costs if you need a print in-between the published sizes. I print on rolls, so I'm not constrained to traditional “A” paper sizes. If you have specific requirements, please get in touch to discuss them, or add your requirements in the print requiremens box in the form above.

How should I calibrate my screen? +

Calibrate your monitor with a device such as a datacolor Spyder to the following targets:

  • White Point D65
  • Gamma 2.2,
  • Brightness 80cd/m2.

If you have an Apple laptop or display with an XDR display you can create a custom preset with these paramaters in System Preferences without a calibration device.

How do I order a canvas? +

Canvas prints offer a contemporary look, are non-reflective, ready to hang, and are ideal for larger pieces. Please order a canvas here.

What file formats do you accept for printing? +

I prefer to work from TIFF files if I am soft proofing your images. Please ensure you have embedded the colour profile. Files should be exported at 300dpi.

Adobe RGB 8 or 16bit TIFF. ProPhoto RGB 16bit TIFF

If you are providing a file which is sized and proofed and ready to print, you can send a high quality JPEG as long as you embed the profile.

More information on colour management.

I’m not experienced at soft-proofing my files for print or working with colour profiles, can you help with this? +

Yes, I am happy to soft-proof and prepare your files for your chosen paper. Just select No Please soft-proof for me in the form above.

Why do you need to know if my file is soft-proofed? +

Asking about soft-proofing ensures we’re on the same page for your print’s color accuracy. I need to know if your file is already soft-proofed and ready to print as-is, or if it requires further adjustments. Without this clarification, I might unintentionally adjust a file that's already been optimized, which can alter the colors or contrast from your intended result. By confirming, I can either print directly or make adjustments as needed to achieve the best match..
