Frozen Landscapes

Since the first time I first crossed the arctic circle I was utterly captivated by the light and the landscapes I saw. I have been almost every winter since, sometimes for three or four weeks. As you will see from my photographs, the snowy and frozen fjords and mountains always inspire me.

The muted tones of the mountain range in contrast to the darker tones of the water on the shoreline drew me to this composition.

The extreme and fast changing weather is what keeps me returning back to the Lofoten Islands and this images sums up the drama of Lofoten in winter.

I have photographed this jetty many times and remember seeing it on my first trip to Tromso. The conditions on this visit demanded a long exposure.

The Fence

I drove past this fence every day on my way to my hotel and between snow storms stopped to make an image of it.

The tail of a humpback whale catching the light of the sun as it dives beneath the surface of a Norwegian fjord.

An aurora in the night sky above a shipwreck on the shore. You can see the lights of Tromso in the distance.

Detached

I always enjoy photographing buildings isolated in the snow. It made me wonder why it had been allowed to fall into disrepair.

Exposed

A weathered red boat-shed. The red huts in Scandinavia are very photogenic agains snowy backdrops.

Amaranthine

Mountain reflections at sunrise at the now iconic village of Reine in the Lofoten Islands.

A display of the northern lights reflecting in the rock-pool at Devils Jaw on Senja.

Crisp edges of snow-lined streams show off the elegant curves of an arctic stream.
